The burgher-library of Berne is a cultural institute of the burgher community of Berne, which has existed since 1951 in today's form but in reality ranges back to the time of reformation. In three units valuable Bernese cultural heritage is being collected and accessible for the pulic with no charges in readingrooms. The fraction Helvetica-Bernensia collects handwritings and archival about history of Berne and Switzerland. The international important collection of the fraction Bongarsiana/Codices contains mainly Latin literature, old-French and Middle High German texts. The fraction grafics constists of more than 20'000 historic visual documents about the city of Berne, Bernese country estates and cultural-historic themes.
