The stately castle-like museum building opposite Berne’s Old Town houses the most important collections on Swiss cultural history. Pride of place is accorded to the Königsfeld diptych of 1290, a masterpiece of Venetian craftsmanship. Another world-famous exhibit is the collection of twelve splendid Franco-Flemish tapestries dating from the 15th and 16th century, including the Thousand Flowers Tapestry with its Eden-like plethora of plants, part of the Burgundian spoils. A new exhibit is the sensational sculpture finds made on the Cathedral platform.
