Blutturm

view on the map

The Blutturm (blood Tower) was built in the 15th century and was a cornerstone of the defensive barrier which stretched around the old town. You can reach it by the path along the riverside or the stairway heading downward at the beginning of Lorraine bridge. A very cozy place at the river Aare with benches and a breathtaking view. Against popular belief, the Blood Tower was most surely never used for torture and executions. In 1806 the Blutturm was used as a mortuary and since then for many different purposes. Sporadically it has been used as a party location.
