The Cityhall is the political center of the city and canton of Bern. The city fire of 1405, which destroyed almost the complete city, was enough reason to start building a new Cityhall with enough prestige to represent the parliament and the Court. Build by Heinrich von Gegenbach (1406-1416) this late-gothic house is used for the conventions of the 200 members of the Bernese parliament, which meets five times a year for public negotiations. Whenever the canton's parliament is meeting the Bernese flag will be flying high on the roof. Inside the building you'll also find the official quarters of the Berne canton executives. The seven members of the government meet every Wednesday in their meeting hall. These meetings are not public.
